Vianode AS was established by Elkem early 2021 and aims to become a leading solutions provider to the fast-growing battery industry. We are now looking for a Research Engineer to join our exciting team.

Our first full-scale industrial plant for production of anode graphite will be built at Herøya and start of production (fast-track) is planned in 2023. This material is a key component in lithium-ion battery cells.

One of our key R&D areas are recycling of graphite back from lithium-ion cell production scrap and end of life batteries and process it back to new anode material. In this research position in Vianode, you will be the main responsible to design and conduct trials in our lab scale and industrial pilot plants on graphite recycling. You would also work on characterize and test materials in our advanced electrochemistry laboratory and prepare data on materials for internal and external presentations and work with the pilot process team for scale up of a new graphite recycling process.

A high degree technical capability and drive is required to understand and resolve technical problems as well as interpersonal skills and ability to analyze and explain results.

Areas of responsibility

• Materials development and testing for the graphite recycling project.

• Interact with recyclers, cell manufacturers and equipment suppliers.

• Design test programs, participate with the process team on producing pilot scale batches of material and conduct tests on new processes and materials

• Work with other development team members and pilot plant team to design, conduct and analyze test programs on finished products

• Be updated on the technology status in the field of anode materials for lithium-ion battery cells and battery recycling.

Qualifications required for the position

• Graduate degree (MS or PhD) in chemistry, materials science or engineering with a research focus on material processing or characterization:

Experience in any of the following is positive

Recycling (of Li ion batteries)

Li ion anode materials

Li ion cell design and manufacturing

Electrochemical testing

• Experience from working in industry

• Able to find solutions to complex technical problems

• Inquisitive nature and motivated by problem solving to find innovative solutions to complex process and technology challenges

• Self-driven and a good team player

• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively interact with all levels of personnel within and outside the company, in an international setting

• Effective presentation, oral and written communication skills

• Fluent in English

The position reports to R&D Director and is located in Kristiansand.
