TOMRA Innovation Internship 2013

Throughout TOMRA’s 40-year history, our employees have used their passion for innovation to create sensor-based solutions enabling efficient and responsible use of the world’s limited resources. These solutions in turn contribute significantly to reducing CO2 emissions worldwide – an estimated 18 million tonnes annually. We are proud of this contribution, and seek to continually develop solutions that will enable even greater savings.

Further to this goal, we are now inviting a group of students to combine their scientific backgrounds and individual drives to work during the summer of 2013 on an exciting project. If they succeed, their invention may save significant amounts of CO2 emissions every year.

Recycling of non-refillable plastic bottles requires CO2-emitting transportation between the collection points (typically supermarkets) and the recycling plants. Compared to the transportation of full-sized empty bottles, the majority of these transportation movements could be saved if one developed a smart and efficient module to compact these bottles at the point of collection. If you are selected for the project, your task as a team will be to think of and create a prototype for such a module that does this.

During your work you will be followed up closely by employees who are experts in the fields of optics, electronics, software, mechanics and prototype development. You will have access to a large selection of advanced equipment, and receive the necessary training to use it. You will work both individually and in close collaboration with your team members, allowing you to both share your expertise with and gain knowledge from your team members.
