Polytec Research Institue is offering a PhD-position within Transient Flow Modeling. The position is funded by Gassco AS and aims at improving the modeling of Gassco’s pipeline system.

Polytec is a research foundation in Haugesund with approximately 50 employees. Flow modeling of natural gas is one of the main focuses of the foundation.

Gassco is the operator of the pipeline network exporting gas from the Norwegian continental shelf to Europe. The export system consists of 7975 km pipelines. Accurate computer models are essential for safe and optimal utilization of the pipeline infrastructure.

Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is the academic partner, and applicants must meet NTNU’s requirements for PhD candidates i.e. Master or equivalent with at least a B average.

The position will be included in a larger project working on improving 1D flow modeling of pipeline gas transport. At present the project employs two PhD candidates.

In addition to looking into methods for improving the models in general, it is planned that the candidate will make use of an ongoing metering program to investigate the interaction between the pipeline and the surrounding soil.

Possible areas of study are:

  • Transient effects.
  • Temperature effects and heat transfer.
  • Analysis of operational data.

Both analytical and experimental approaches may be used or combined, and the candidate’s interests will be decisive for both field of study and approach to the problem.

We can offer competitive salary and good work conditions.
